Cardiorespiratory fitness is important for health and key to athletic performance. We offer three types of aerobic fitness testing to let you know where you stand and help you make health and performance goals.

SUBMAXIMAL AEROBIC FITNESS TESTING

The submaximal aerobic fitness test is a graded exercise test performed on a bicycle.  This test will give you an accurate estimate of your aerobic fitness level, allowing you to compare your cardiovascular fitness to others in your age group. Knowing your aerobic fitness level can be useful for setting fitness goals, determining proper individual exercise intensity, and evaluating the results of an exercise program. This test is included in the Fitness Assessment Package.

V02max Aerobic Fitness Testing

VO 2max (maximal oxygen uptake) is accepted as the criterion measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. PEAK uses open-circuit spirometry to accurately measure VO 2max. VO 2max testing can be particularly beneficial for trained endurance athletes, such as runners, cyclists, and triathletes, as aerobic fitness is a key determinant of endurance performance. Athletes can use VO 2max testing information to determine training intensity and gauge results of a training program.

What to Expect

  • 75-minute appointment
  • Graded exercise test lasting 8-14 minutes (not including warm-up and cool-down)
  • Can be completed on a treadmill or a bicycle
  • Heart rate is monitored
  • Athlete will wear a nose clip and mouthpiece to capture exhaled air
  • Oxygen uptake is measured with a metabolic cart
  • Results are available immediately after the test is completed
  • PEAK exercise physiologist will explain test results

A detailed document explaining the results of your tests, in addition to methods of applications will be provided.

Lactate Threshold Testing

Lactate threshold is a good predictor of athletic endurance performance. The lactate threshold is a point during physical activity where blood lactate builds up faster than your body can remove it.

Lactate threshold (or anaerobic threshold) is a good predictor of athletic endurance performance. The lactate threshold is a point during physical activity where blood lactate builds up faster than your body can remove it.

With proper training, athletes can increase their lactate threshold and can tolerate higher intensity exercise for longer amounts of time.

Knowing your lactate threshold can help you determine a training regimen to improve your athletic performance.
