Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center Ranks Among Nation’s Top 10 Best

U.S. News & World Report now ranks the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah among the nation’s Top 10 eye centers.

The Moran Eye Center took the No. 10 spot in the magazine’s report. U.S. News & World Report bases its rankings on voting results asking ophthalmologists across the nation where they would send their patients with the most complex eye conditions.

Moran Eye Center CEO and Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Distinguished Professor and Chair Randall J Olson, MD, said the ranking is a recognition of just how far Utah has come.

"When I started practicing 40 years ago, Utahns had very few eye care options, and I was, in fact, the sole ophthalmologist at the University of Utah," he said. "My goal was to create a premier eye care center in Utah. This ranking confirms patients can find eye care in the Mountain West that rivals that of the coasts, including some of the best-known names in health care. I am thankful for our highly skilled team and this recognition from their peers."

U.S. News & World Report says its aim to help patients make crucially important health care decisions. For ophthalmology, the magazine only publishes rankings for institutions that receive at least five percent of votes over a three-year period.

While U.S. News & World Report rated University of Utah Hospital No. 1 in Utah and the Salt Lake City metro area for the ninth consecutive year, Moran’s ranking marks the first time any University of Utah ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ clinical facility has placed in the Top 10.

"Dr. Olson is a visionary leader and built a remarkable program," said Michael L. Good, MD, CEO of University of Utah ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, Dean of the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Senior Vice President of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ Sciences. "This national recognition from peers affirms the Moran Eye Center at University of Utah ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ provide some of the best eye care in the entire country, right here in Utah."

On the 2022-2023 Best Hospitals list, the Moran Eye Center finds itself ranked among some of the country’s most established and prestigious eye centers:

  2. Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals
