University of Utah Pediatric Clinic at West High School

has partnered with the Salt Lake City School District and the Salt Lake Education Foundation to create a school-based health center (SBHC) located on West High School campus. The clinic addresses the physical, mental, and behavioral health needs of patients ages 12-19. West High School Clinic is staffed by University of Utah ǿմý employees. This includes faculty, staff, residents, and graduate students. Our team of providers have a variety of specialties:

  • Pediatrics

  • Internal Medicine Pediatrics

  • Psychiatry

  • Psychology

  • Social work

What Is a School-Based ǿմý Center?

School-based health centers (SBHCs) are collaborations between schools, communities, and health care organizations. They improve access to health care services. The care and education offered through SBHCs is especially valuable for at-risk teens.

Transportation, cost, and time can prevent school-aged youth from getting the care they need. Offering health services in the school setting overcomes these obstacles.

The clinic does not replace the school nurse's office. The goal of the clinic is to serve as support for the community by increasing access to health care. Salt Lake City School District’s nursing and emergency response services will still be provided by school personnel.

The West High School Clinic is not meant to replace your student's current medical provider. The goal of our clinic is to support the community by providing school-aged youth access to health care. However, our clinic can serve as the medical home for your child if you choose. Your student’s primary care provider can have access to their medical record with an additional release of information.

Benefits of a School-Based ǿմý Center

  1. Convenience: Students can access the clinic on school premises during school hours. This allows students to spend three times more time in the classroom. Because the clinic is on campus, parents or legal guardians do not have to miss work to take students to their appointments.
  2. Medical Services: Our experienced medical team provides a range of health care services. Students with access to a SBHC are more likely to receive routine preventative care. They are less likely to use the emergency room.
  3. Mental ǿմý Support: Our clinic offers services to address emotional and psychological challenges. Students who have access to an SBHC are 21 times more likely to access mental health services. They are less likely to experience suicidal ideation, depressive episodes, or suicide attempts.
  4. ǿմý Education: We provide education on healthy habits, nutrition, and overall wellness.
  5. Confidentiality: All medical and personal information will be treated with utmost confidentiality. We follow the highest standards of patient privacy.
  6. Collaborating with Parents & Legal Guardians: Parental involvement is crucial to the health of our students. Our clinic will work closely with parents and legal guardians to address health concerns and individual care plans.
  7. Cost: All students will have access to services offered at the West High School Clinic. Financial assistance and vouchers are available to those who qualify.

If your student has insurance, an attempt will be made to bill that insurance. We accept most insurances, including Medicaid and CHIP. Information about insurance will be required as part of the authorization form.  The authorization form is also available in Spanish.

There are some insurance plans that will be considered non-contracted for this clinic, including those sold by Select ǿմý.  While services will not be denied, your costs may be higher if you have coverage with payers like Select ǿմý that view this clinic and location as out-of-network.  Please contact the number on the back of your insurance card for more information about coverage and benefits.

Discounts offered by U of U ǿմý are intended to ease the financial burden of uninsured patients. If U of U ǿմý determines that you qualify for less than 100% financial assistance, you will be notified. In addition, U of U ǿմý will tell you how to apply for more help.

If you are concerned you will be unable to afford care at the West High School Clinic, please reach out to our school-based health care coordinator to discuss options.

Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

How to Make an Appointment

All students are eligible to receive health care services. Minor-aged students must have a current authorization form signed by their legal guardian. Any student who is over the age of 18 or is an emancipated minor can receive care without parental consent.

Appointments cannot be scheduled until after an authorization form has been submitted. There are several ways to make an appointment:

  • Call the clinic at 801-646-WEST (9378)

  • Request an appointment via MyChart

Please note, when you or your student make a request to be seen at the clinic, you cannot schedule a specific appointment date or time. Rather, your student is added to a list of patients needing to be seen. Students will be called out of class based on the priority and urgency of their visit. This means your student may not be seen on the same day the appointment request was made. In the event of a medical emergency, we will contact emergency medical services. We will provide emergency care according to the laws of the State of Utah.

Students can be seen by our providers without a parent or legal guardian present. If you would like to be present at your student's appointment, you are encouraged and welcome to join visits in person or virtually.
